Don’t let the gray skies dampen your spirits

Join Ranger Nic for some exciting rain-day adventures

Discover the Lighthouse Keepers

Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum honors the keepers who worked hard to keep the light on and help sailors find their way during stormy nights from 1868 to 1926. When you visit, you’ll learn about these keepers and their families and see some of their old furniture and cool antiques. Learning about their lives and how they kept the lighthouse glowing through the night is a fun way to discover the history of the park.

Explore the Wildlife of Peninsula State Park

The White Cedar Nature Center offers a variety of activities including scavenger hunts and interactive displays where you can learn about animals and trees in the park. Look out for “Wisconsin Wildcards” with fun animal facts scattered around. There are detailed maps of Peninsula State Park, a back room with fishing info and rentable poles, and a kid-friendly fishing area with metal fish to catch. The center also features books to read, a craft table with coloring and origami, nature-themed puzzles and games, a bird-watching area with binoculars, and a puppet station.

Unplug And Enjoy Family Games

A rainy day is the perfect time to tuck away in your tent, camper, or cottage, put your devices away, and enjoy some analog fun! The Camp Store has a great selection of games for all ages including, Uno, Cribbage, Farkel, and Bananagrams. Our newest addition to the store is a selection of Discover playing cards featuring incredible photos of wildlife; the perfect practical gift for the nature enthusiast. We also have some wonderful games for the kids, Ranger Nic’s favorite is Jr Ranger’s Poop Tracks, not just because of the name!

Take A Watery Wonderland Hike

If you’re not afraid of a few raindrops, hiking in the rain is a unique way to check out the trails in Peninsula State Park. The forest becomes a watery wonderland when it’s drizzling; the extra bonus is you’ll likely have the trails all to yourself. If you forgot your raincoat, pick up a rain poncho in The Camp Store before you head out, and stop back for a hot chocolate afterward. Be extra mindful of your steps on any rock outcrops you encounter - they can get very slippery when wet.

Dive into the History of Fish Creek

A great activity for history buffs is visiting the Alexander Noble House Museum. Ranger Nic doesn’t recommend taking the small pups along, but more mature visitors will enjoy the guided tour of a traditional home, with rooms set up to represent different eras. With an overall theme of Fish Creek’s history, the exhibit changes every few weeks, so you could visit a couple of times per summer. There is also a free audio tour of Fish Creek you listen to on your own device, including historical information about local buildings.
